Growth + Form is a major group show presented by Gallery FUMI, curated by design historian Libby Sellers, and with exhibition design by Leendert de Vos.
Reflecting on Gallery FUMI's evolution over the past fifteen years, crystal emerged as a fitting emblem of growth and transformation. Just as crystals manifest from minute particles into stunning geometric configurations, so too has the gallery flourished into a bastion of artistic innovation.
Inspired by the biologist and scholar D'Arcy Wentworth Thompson and his seminal work "On Growth and Form," this exhibition delves into the intersection of science and creativity. Thompson's exploration of natural geometries in the dynamics of growth and physical processes serves as a springboard for Libby Seller’s curation, with the gallery’s artists and designers prompted to explore the intricate dance between knowledge, form, and materiality.
What binds the various processes and aesthetics to Thompson’s treatise is an intensive engagement with materials and forms in flux. Here they are seen as vibrant and active – sprouting, swirling, twisting, turning – transferring material and form into objects of beauty.
