JAMESPLUMB

JAMESPLUMB is a creative studio, founded by artists James Russell & Hannah Plumb.  Founded in South London in 2009, the duo relocated to Shropshire Hills in 2022 where they now live and work.

JAMESPLUMB thinks of their work in two streams: Objects and Environments. Our Objects include sculptures, furniture, and fine art installations. The work that they exhibit, both in the gallery and off-site, is crafted site specifically, and always sensitive to its audience. Their Environments encompass interior, event, or architectural design, and creative direction. Projects are commercial or residential, and are both permanent or impermanent–a home, a retail space, a one room hotel, or a one-off event–with global brands or with private individuals.

The duo immerses themselves deeply in every project, creating works that offer depth and resonance. Their focus on authenticity is unwavering, not just in the surface veneer of aesthetics, but in how the work will feel to use, and inhabit.

For JAMESPLUMB, the act of making is incredibly important.  For both their Objects and Environments, the duo develops concepts physically through material and process exploration. There is often an exchange between the two strands of their practice: they make and install the objects they’ve designed to populate their environments, and they conceive and build inhabitable environments to experience their objects. Having no fixed or set processes, the artists are ever open to learn and adapt their skills towards whichever processes their ideas and work need, with their workshop operating in an extremely versatile and continuously evolving fashion.

The distinction between art and design is blurred and interchangeable in their work and broader world view. A table becomes an artwork, or a sculpture becomes a chair. An art installation is designed to be inhabited, and an interior design is approached as an artwork. Their primary concern is less about how to define their work, but with what it adds to the sensation of the world around us.
