Marking his debut exhibition with Gallery FUMI, Pacific introduces a new
series of sculptures and furniture by San Francisco-based artist and designer Jesse Schlesinger. Labour, craft, and process are key to his practice, with this new body of work uniting modernist clarity with traditional woodworking.
Instinctive interventions of colour become central to the series, evoking
oceanic depths or the fleeting iridescence of a butterfly wing. At once
intimate and expansive, these works invite quiet contemplation, grounding us in the essential relationship between making and being.
Working across a wide range of media–wood, bronze, ceramic, glass, steel,
concrete, and paint–Schlesinger’s sculptures, installations, and design objects exemplify the dramatic scale of the natural landscape of California, utilising materials that are, for the most part, derived locally. Bearing the mark of the creative legacy of the Bay Area while simultaneously deriving significant aesthetic influence from his extensive travels in Japan, Pacific reflects over fifteen years of Schlesinger’s practice.
