Gallery FUMI is pleased to present Glass Transfigurations - a duo solo show by Jochen Holz and 6:AM Glassworks. In this exhibition, glass undergoes surreal transformations into sculptural design works.
Works include new additions to Jochen Holz’s La Belle et la Bête series, which draws inspiration from Jean Cocteau’s 1946 surrealist film adaption of Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont’s 18th-century fairy tale. Highly regarded in the realm of French cinema, the film’s enduring appeal lies in its ability to capture the enchantment of the original fairy tale while infusing it with surreal expression.
Consisting of intricately winding glass ‘arms’ that emit light, Holz’s works echo the fantastical living chandelier arms extending from the walls of the castle, encapsulating the otherworldly beauty of Cocteau’s distinct visual language, whilst instilling a contemporary twist that firmly plants it in the modern era.
Transfiguration also emerges as a theme central to new works by 6:AM Glassworks’ 1/1/1 glass sculpture series, in which unpredictable shapes are formed through the process of creating moulds sourced from scrap material found in the furnace. Further manipulation enables the works to become wholly functional design pieces as side tables.
The works in the exhibition seamlessly blend utilitarian functionality with the enigmatic allure of glass. With 6:AM Glassworks’ design pieces occupying the floor and Holz’s lighting residing above, the essence of transfiguration is woven throughout the entirety of the space.
